Understanding The Many VarietiesOf Specialized Dog Training Techniques
Sunday, January 8th, 2012Although you can train your dog in a very basic way, there are many possibilities beyond teaching them to sit or stay. Depending upon the breed and quality of the dog, they can be trained in a variety of ways. Although dogs can be used to protect people, they can also be trained to find things with their heightened sense of smell. An example of this would be narcotics or other illegal drugs. To start your specialized dog training, to teach your dog to do specific tasks, here are a few tips to help you.
An important role that many dogs play is saving people by rescuing them. Rescue dogs have been used for years to recover people that are trapped or stuck in places with extreme weather conditions. There are many areas for which rescue dogs are trained.
Dogs that are trained in this manner can deal with extreme climate and topography that is difficult to navigate. They must be comfortable with heights and have a good sense of balance, as many rescue operations take place in the mountains. Aside from this, rescue dogs are taught to track people by scent in all kinds of conditions. Most people will agree that a dog does not need to have rescue training to protect you properly. Simply bring a dog with you when you go out into the woods or hiking for extra protection and safety.
Historically, farmers and herders took advantage of dogs and this custom continues to the present time. Rounding up cattle and livestock with their herding abilities is something a lot of breeds can do and Border Collies, Australian Shepherds and German Shepherds are some examples. These breeds, as well as some others have an inborn instinct for herding and this can be handy for getting animals on farms and ranches all together in one place. Few people know about it, but geese management is another thing that these dogs are really useful for. Geese are often a nuisance at airports, on golf courses, race tracks and other public places. There are some herding dogs that learn specifically to chase geese away and dissuading them from going to these places.
Teaching your dog to do tricks is one of the favorite pastimes of dog owners. There are some basic dog tricks that we’ve all seen, such as rolling over or fetching a ball, but a well trained dog can be taught an almost unlimited number of stunts. A good example of this is advanced clicker training. To train your dog, you would use this clicker which is a very simple way to train your animal. If you get very good, your dog can actually be trained to get food out of the refrigerator or fetch your paper. Not all dogs are able to learn the most advanced tricks, but if you have a highly intelligent and well behaved dog, you can teach him to do a surprising number of tasks.
You can do specialized dog training if you really want to try. A dog can be trained to do tricks, rescue people, and an assortment of other possibilities. Different breeds of dogs are often better at certain things than others. A dog who would make an ideal guard dog, for example, might not be the best therapy dog. Hopefully, using the few examples that we have presented, you will understand how to start your own specialized dog training program.
